Accessibility

Recipes are for everyone, and the website that holds them should be too. Nema's Kitchen is built to work with a keyboard, a screen reader, a phone held in one hand, or a laptop propped up in a kitchen.

Our standard

The site is designed and tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA. We treat that as the floor, not the ceiling, and we keep checking as the site changes.

What we’ve done

  • Structure. Every page has one main heading, headings in a logical order, and proper landmarks (header, navigation, main, footer), so you can jump around with a screen reader. A “Skip to content” link is the first thing on every page.
  • Keyboard. Everything you can do with a mouse you can do with a keyboard. Focus is always visible. The menu on small screens opens as a dialog, keeps focus inside it, closes with Escape, and returns you to where you were.
  • Colour and text. Text and background colours meet the AA contrast ratio. Colour is never the only way information is shown. You can zoom the page to 200% in your browser, and the layout reflows down to 320 pixels wide with no sideways scrolling.
  • Images. Every food photograph has a description. Purely decorative pieces, like the pinned note on the homepage, are hidden from assistive technology.
  • Touch. Buttons and links are sized and spaced for fingers, not just cursors.
  • Motion. If your device asks for reduced motion, the site’s animations and transitions switch off.
  • Forms. Every field has a label, errors are announced and explained in words, and nothing depends on a colour change alone.
  • Recipes. Ingredients can be checked off with a keyboard or a tap, and the state is announced. Recipe cards print cleanly on one page without the navigation or forms.

How we test

Before each release we run automated checks (axe-core, WCAG 2.2 AA rules) across the main page types at phone and desktop sizes, plus a crawl of every page that checks headings, image descriptions, tap-target size, and sideways scrolling. We also walk the site by keyboard alone. Automated tools catch only part of what matters, which is why your feedback is the most useful test we have.

What we know about

  • The site links out to Amazon, nemafood.com, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook. We can’t control how accessible those sites are.
  • Photo descriptions describe the finished dish rather than every item in the picture.
  • We haven’t yet tested with every combination of screen reader and browser. The site uses standard HTML and ARIA that VoiceOver, NVDA, JAWS, and TalkBack understand, but if something behaves strangely in yours, we want to know.
